Automated learning technology can help make notifications on our phones smarter
At this time, notifications on our smartphones are not fairly smart. They appear instantly as soon as something appears, if it an email, text message, or anything else on social networks or other services. The burden is often on the user to manage his notices and choose what he wants and does not want to see.
But what if our phones become smart enough to know what we usually respond to? This is something developers in Taiwan are trying to do. Through the use of automated learning technology, our phones can start learning our habits to determine which notifications to display and which ones should not.
Developers TonTon Hsien-de Huang and Hung-Yu Kao have created an algorithm to learn what users are responding to and what they are not responding to. This algorithm is similar to the algorithms used on Facebook and Instagram where the posts you think we like are displayed at the top, while those things that are less important are buried.
It's an interesting project but it remains to be seen whether companies will integrate this technology into their smartphones. Until then, if you're interested in learning more about the developers' efforts above, you can find more information about them on Arxiv.
