Alphabet launches Outline, a secure VPN for journalists

Google announced the Google News Initiative to combat false news earlier today, and now the company has decided to launch a secure VPN for journalists called Outline. Alpha, the parent company of Google, says the new service has been developed and launched by Jigsaw, a technology incubator at Alphabet. Outline is an open source VPN that enables news organizations to have secure access to the open Internet.

Outline will enable news organizations and businesses to easily set up a VPN server on their own server so that they can safely connect to the Internet and ensure the privacy of their connections. Many people around the world use VPN VPNs to protect themselves online but not all VPN services are safe and reliable. Most of them require users to trust a third-party enterprise and often do not know who manages the servers on which they rely. But this is different with Outline because it allows news organizations to set up VPN on their servers. Outline also does not record users' traffic at all.
News organizations can set up Outline on any cloud provider or even their own servers so they can own and run their own VPN, eliminating the need to trust an external VPN vendor to handle their data. Plans start at about $ 5 a month.

Jigsaw says Outline is a product at an initial stage and will release releases for other platforms in the future.
