Google announces "Chat", a new experience for text messaging for Android devices

Google seems to love creating messaging apps. We've seen the company manage multiple messaging platforms, such as Hangouts and Allo, as well as many integrated messaging apps in the Android system. This is because, unlike Apple, Android does not have a unified iMessages platform, but it is expected to change.

In an exclusive report from The Verge, Google announced its latest messaging efforts, named "Chat". Now it may come to your mind that this is just another application to send text messages from Google, but that's not true. Instead, the "Chat" feature is based on the "Universal Profile for Rich Communication Services" standard, and Google's plan is to use SMS to send messages that are not like old text messages, but rather like messages in modern chat applications.

In fact, Google seems to be relying on Chat to become a new standard for messaging, so much so that it has stopped working on developing the Google Allo application for the Chat feature. This is not a slowdown in development, but a complete halt as The Verge reports that Google will move the entire team from Google Allo and focus on Android Messages where Chat will be used.

This new feature will be turned on by default in the Android Messages app. Google wants to make it clear that this service is not part of the company's services, but rather a service based on carriers. The company hopes to issue "Chat" in the next six or 12 months. As for support, this feature is supported by 55 telecoms companies, 11 hardware manufacturers and two operating system providers, Google and Microsoft. For Apple, they are not on the list.
