How to back up your calendar data and contacts on iCloud

iCloud is a great service to sync information across your Mac and iOS devices, including calendar and contacts.

But services may sometimes fail. If you are concerned about data loss, or just because you are unable to access or update your calendars or contacts on iCloud you can support them by uploading them to your Mac from iCloud.com.



How to create a copy of the data from iCloud to your Mac:

  • Create a backup of calendar data from iCloud.
  • Create a backup of contact data from iCloud.

How to create a backup of calendar data from iCloud

  • From your favorite browser, go to iCloud.com.
  • Sign in to your iCloud account.

  • Click Calendar.
  • Click the share icon next to the calendar you want to back up.
  • Click the checkbox next to the public calendar "To make your calendar public."
  • Click Copy Link.
  • Paste the link in your browser's address bar.
  • Replace webcal in the link with http.
  • Press "Back" or "Enter" on the keyboard, and the calendar will be downloaded to the Downloads folder.
  • Click Cancel if you do not want to add this calendar to the Calendar app on your Mac.
  • Open iCloud Calendars.
  • Click the share icon next to the shared calendar.
  • Click the checkbox next to the public calendar again if you want your calendar to be private again
You'll need to repeat this process for any other calendars you want to back up.

How to back up contact data from iCloud
  • Go to iCloud.com through your favorite browser.
  • Sign in to your iCloud account.
  • Click Contacts.
  • Click the contact group you want to back up
  • Select all contacts you want to save.
  • Click the Settings tab.
  • Click Export vCard.
  • Click Cancel if you do not want to import this vCard directly to your contacts on your Mac.
